Council introduces ordinances to set mayor and council pay for next term

The Hammond City Council on Nov. 18 introduced two ordinances that would establish compensation for the mayor and for councilmembers effective with the commencement of the next full term. Mayor Pete Penpinto told the council the Charter Review Committee researched and recommended the pay changes and that the introduction will not affect his current term or salary. A public hearing on the mayor's pay was scheduled for Dec. 9.
Council members split on both introductions. For the mayoral compensation ordinance, recorded voices at introduction showed Councilmen Andrews, Gonzales and Leon voting to introduce and Councilmen Wells and DeVaterio recorded as No. The separate ordinance for council compensation was introduced after similar discussion and a recorded split vote. Both measures were introduced for later public hearings and are not yet adopted policies.
