Committee reviews Dog Days plan for daycare and overnight boarding at Miller Drive site

At its Nov. 17 Committee of the Whole meeting, North Aurora staff presented a special-use application from Dog Days to open a combined doggy daycare and overnight boarding facility at 71 to 81 Miller Drive, a recently built building in the Bridal Square development.
Village planner Morgan Panardi told the committee the proposal would use the entire building behind the Dunkin' Donuts with minimal exterior changes limited mainly to converting about six parking spaces into an outdoor dog relief area. Panardi said the zoning ordinance requires nine parking spaces; the site would retain 33 spaces after the conversion and staff expects the business to employ about "25 to 28" people.
Owner Jeff Bowen described operations, saying the facility would include roughly 40 overnight suites and the capacity to serve about 60 additional dogs in daytime care, "so we could have about a 100 dogs in this location," a figure he called a maximum rather than a routine load. Bowen said dogs would be divided into multiple indoor play groups and taken outside only a few times a day, with overnight dogs housed in suites; staffing would remain on site until about 8 p.m., and employees typically return by 6 a.m.
Trustees asked about noise mitigation and waste handling. Bowen said interior separations and supervised outdoor time would limit barking, and described installing approximately 6-foot PVC fencing with a 1-foot lattice top around the outdoor relief area and laying canine turf over pea gravel for drainage. He also said the facility would have video surveillance and an alarm and fire system.
Panardi noted the plan commission has already reviewed the application. Staff said the committee's role is to decide whether to forward the special-use request to the village board for final consideration; committee members offered generally supportive comments during the discussion.
The committee did not take a final vote on the special use at this meeting; staff said the item will go to the village board for a subsequent vote.
