Council approves time-limited nightlife enforcement working group after debate

The Providence City Council approved a resolution to create a time‑limited working group on enforcement of city ordinances related to nightlife after debate over the group's composition.

Councilman Androbois moved the item on behalf of absent sponsor Councilman Royas and urged support, saying the group would give "residents and businesses... an opportunity to have their voice heard" where commercial and residential areas abut. "It's particularly important for those parts of the city where residential and commercial folks are just abutting each other," he said.

Councilman Oscar Vargas questioned whether appointees would include people with business experience, saying, "we have a group of people that they don't have no businesses and no experience to work on this type of ordinance." The sponsor replied that appointments will include business representatives and that the group's focus is enforcement of existing nightlife rules, not changing entertainment licensing. The sponsor described the goal as a forum for residents, businesses, the Board of Licenses and police to "look at what's working, what might work better, and what we might need state action to support."

After a brief procedural exchange (including withdrawal and reintroduction of the motion to allow members to cast separate votes on related items), the council voted to waive the reading of item 15 and pass on a voice vote. The clerk announced the result: 9 ayes, 1 abstention, 1 no; the motion carried and the matter was approved.
