The Bolton Board of Selectmen voted Dec. 2 to disband the Board of Education’s prior building committee for the middle school roof and to take steps toward a new temporary building committee to advance repairs and replacement.
Meeting discussion noted the middle school roof requires significant work, with masonry and parapet deterioration highlighted by selectmen. The board said the Board of Education had not advanced the prior committee’s work and the selectmen, plus school leadership, agreed a new, temporary building committee should begin work under selectmen oversight. The chair told members the town and school have agreed the selectmen will take the lead to get the project moving.
Board members discussed the composition of the temporary committee and referenced the town charter’s guidance on temporary commissions. Proposed composition mentioned in the meeting included two Board of Education members, two selectmen and three at-large members with construction experience; another remark noted the charter describes temporary building commissions as commonly five members with two alternates, which the board will resolve when placing committee-formation on the next agenda.
A selectman emphasized scope: "It's gonna it's gonna be a $5,000,000 project anyways," underscoring the project's substantial scale. The motion to disband the existing committee carried by voice vote and selectmen directed staff to place formation of the new committee on the upcoming agenda.
