The governing board approved contracts to build an ADA-accessible crosswalk and install about 80 bicycle parking spaces at Mountain Trail Academy; the crosswalk will be coordinated with Maricopa Department of Transportation and bike racks will be paid with a School Facilities Division award.
The Queen Creek Unified School District governing board approved two site-improvement contracts for Mountain Trail Academy on Tuesday: a crosswalk across Mountain Road with ADA ramps and signage, and installation of roughly 80 bicycle parking spaces inside the school fence.
Bob Lawson and Amber Bridal presented the projects during the construction update. Lawson said the new bike area "will create approximately 80 spaces for bicycle parking" and that the crosswalk plans include ADA-accessible sidewalk ramps and painted crosswalks to the south corner of Galveston Road. The district said it is working with the Maricopa Department of Transportation on plan review and will have signage and a crossing guard; staff noted the signage would include reminders to slow to 15 mph in the student crossing area.
Board members voted to award McCarthy Building Companies the contract to construct the crosswalk and to install the bike racks. Staff said the bike-rack installation will use funds awarded by the School Facilities Division and that district operating funds will not be used for the racks.
Facilities staff said the crosswalk and bike racks are intended to support families walking and biking to campus and align with the district's priority of effective operations and student safety. Board members did not record any amendments to the projects at the meeting.
