Council approves purchase of Type 6 fire engine, citing fleet-replacement planning

The Madera City Council voted to approve a purchase agreement and budget amendment to buy a Boise Mobile Equipment (BME) Type 6 custom fire engine.
Fire Chief Larry Pendarvis described the department’s apparatus replacement program and said the proposed vehicle would be a 2026 BME Type 6, intended as a frontline engine that would replace an older apparatus and move that older unit into reserve status. During his presentation he said the city has accumulated funds in the fire equipment replacement fund and noted the engine’s base price: “The base price for it is 461,480 and 25¢.”
Pendarvis told the council the new engine holds 300 gallons of water, has rear-mounted controls (a safety improvement) and is suitable for grass and brush fires and river bottom access. He said delivery would take about 2½ to 3 years and that equipping the engine fully would add roughly $100,000 in equipment costs, to be presented closer to delivery.
Council moved and approved the requested purchase agreement and budget amendment. The item was informational until the council voted; there were no public objections during the hearing.
The purchase will be funded from the Measure K fire budget and the equipment‑replacement fund; staff said continued fleet planning anticipates future replacements on a multi‑year schedule.
