Council approves multiple sports‑facility namings, directs process to rename Tracy Sports Complex for Brent Ives

The Tracy City Council approved several facility namings on Dec. 2, recognizing local volunteers and former elected officials for long‑term contributions to parks and sports programs.

Council agreed to name the southern soccer fields at Legacy Fields the Shirley Thompson Soccer Fields in recognition of Thompson’s multi‑decade work building local soccer programs, including support for Top Soccer and youth soccer access. Speakers representing TYSL and family members described Thompson’s role in establishing the facilities and working for children’s sports over decades.

Council also approved a motion to name the Legacy Fields baseball/softball wagons (A and C fields) the Robert Rickman Ballfields for his ongoing work on youth baseball and sports programs.

On a separate motion council directed staff to begin the public process under the newly revised naming policy to rename the entire Tracy Sports Complex in honor of former Mayor Brent Ives. Councilmembers noted that renaming an entire facility triggers the public process detailed in the policy; staff will engage the public and bring recommendations back to Parks & Rec and council.

City staff said they will return with monument and signage options along with cost estimates for council consideration.
