Madera council introduces ordinance to adjust council stipends under state law

Gonzales said the council last amended compensation in February 2014, when the monthly stipend increased from $345 to $500. Under SB 329 (cited in the presentation), the maximum allowable monthly stipend for cities with the applicable population bracket increased to $1,600. Staff presented three options: maintain the current $500 monthly stipend (no cost), apply a full 5% annual adjustment since 2014 to reach about $1,800 per month, or adopt a smaller increase determined by the council. Any approved change would take effect after the November 2026 election.
After no public comment, a council member moved to waive further reading and introduce the ordinance by title only. The council voted in favor and the motion passed unanimously.
