Rice Lake students honored at Sept. 22 school board meeting

The Rice Lake Area School District board recognized multiple students from across district schools for September student-of-the-month honors and highlighted upcoming student activities including homecoming and the high school musical.
Mark Bicey, assistant principal at Rice Lake High School, introduced senior John (son of Paul and Danette Barofka) and praised his academic performance, CTE coursework in welding and plans to enroll at Northwest Technical College for a commercial driver’s license. "He's been going through his programming, has been checking off his goals," Bicey said, noting John’s summer work operating heavy equipment in Alaska.
Erin Hunter, library media specialist for the elementary schools, nominated Tayden Peterson as Haugen Elementary's September student of the month, saying Tayden "exemplifies the Warrior Way 100% of the time" in classrooms, lunchrooms and on the playground. Carla Grenier, art teacher at Tainter and Haugen elementary schools, introduced Abigail Barkley, a fourth grader praised for leadership in music and art. Audra Norton, Hilltop Elementary art teacher, recognized Jasmine Chun for musical and artistic achievement and classroom leadership.
Student representatives Porter Corbin and Sophia Winfield updated the board on student-life programming. They described changes to Freshman First Day designed to engage incoming students, summarized pep-assembly activities and said about 67 seniors attended senior sunrise. They outlined homecoming week plans — an assembly, class dress-up days, spirit-stick competitions, teacher-of-the-week features, and evening events such as dodgeball and a post-game bonfire — and promoted a revived homecoming kids fair and an October "rake and run" community service event.
The board chair told the students their names would be entered into an end-of-year drawing for Chromebooks. The meeting then moved on to routine business.
