Students report on Mamma Mia production, fall sports successes and a new screen-time challenge

Student representatives Porter Corbin and Mariana Gilbert briefed the board on high-school activities on Nov. 10, announcing performances, athletic results and a student-led screen-time reduction challenge.

Porter Corbin, junior class representative, urged the public to attend Mamma Mia, listing show dates and ticket prices and saying the production has been rehearsed since September. "Our first event is we have Mamma Mia coming up in a few days," Corbin said, and he encouraged community attendance.

The students also recapped fall sports: the boys soccer team reached sectionals, volleyball advanced to a sectional final, the football team won two playoff rounds before a close loss late in the season, and cross-country runner Carter Kuchko won a sectional title. Girls swim and dive produced several individual qualifiers with relays advancing to state-level competition, the students reported.

Finally, the high school announced a two-week screen-time challenge organized by the Warrior Leadership Team to encourage reduced phone use, with weekly homeroom and individual winners and prizes including a drawing for a $100 gift card and a homeroom party. Students noted the initiative aims to improve sleep, mental health and engagement during darker winter months.

The board asked a few clarifying questions about baseline screen-time data and logistics; students said they had not run a formal baseline comparison but that participating apps can provide past-week averages for comparison.

What's next: Community members were encouraged to attend upcoming concerts and the Mamma Mia performances; the board received the student report for information.
