The Westford School Committee voted Dec. 15 to adopt updated language to policy P6128, which clarifies how competency determination will apply to coursework completed outside Westford Academy, including AP self‑study and dual‑enrollment options.
Committee Chair said the policy language was provided after DESE review and that the policy subcommittee had revised the draft. The revised text is intended to ensure that competency-determination coursework done via self‑study or through approved dual‑enrollment channels is evaluated under Westford Academy’s competency standards "so that those options come under WA’s purview," the Chair said.
Committee members raised questions about translation of posted policies. Staff noted the Program of Studies will be posted in Google format to enable translation; members discussed whether to commission official translations for legal policy text but acknowledged the cost and that the district typically provides translations on request.
The committee moved and approved the updated P6128. Staff said they will finalize wording, produce a PDF and post the updated policy and Program of Studies online for public review before DESE submission.
What’s next: staff will publish the updated PDF, coordinate translations as needed, and return any further substantive edits to the committee for future meetings.
