Council approves raising events and recreation coordinator to full-time, 5–2 vote

The Newcastle City Council on Dec. 2 voted 5–2 to amend the 2026 salary schedule and increase the events and recreation coordinator position from 0.8 full-time equivalent (FTE) to 1.0 FTE.
City Manager Pingel explained the position had been funded at 0.8 FTE in earlier budget action but that service needs and communications duties (including emergency notifications) prompted a request to restore it to full time: "When that budget was, adopted, that amount was amended down to leave it at 0.8. And this is a request to reinstate that to 1 FTE." Mayor Clark said he had changed his earlier vote and supported the adjustment, describing his prior vote as "a personal, poor choice." Council members who supported the change cited continuity of service, communications needs during storms and a public-safety component to the position; supporters included Council member Burford and others who praised the incumbent's extra work.
Council member Sherlock moved the ordinance (2025-681) to amend the 2026 salary schedule; the motion was seconded and the council approved the ordinance by roll call, 5 in favor and 2 opposed.
Next steps: staff will update the 2026 salary schedule and reflect the new 23.2 total FTEs in the budget documents.
