Toby Scott, the Lakeshore Protection Committee member serving as the planning commission representative, presented two draft letters to the Whitefish City Council asking whether the correspondence about shoreline development violations should come from the Lakeshore Protection Committee or from the City Council itself. Scott said the letters target recent shore‑line issues and seek county attention to actions he described as harmful to Whitefish Lake and its view corridors.
Scott noted the committee previously proposed a bill—referenced by name as having been introduced by state senator Dave Fern—that would have given the committee broader jurisdiction over the entire lakeshore, but the measure did not advance out of committee. He asked council members for direction on whether the city should engage the county and whether staff should refine and submit the letters.
Council members responded that planning staff should help rework the letters, that it may be effective for both the Lakeshore Protection Committee and the council to forward the correspondence to county commissioners, and that staff would coordinate next steps.
Mayor John Mulfeld said the item would be brought up again under council communications earlier in the agenda and asked planning staff to work with the committee to present a refined approach to the county.
