The Waunakee Community School District board approved four course proposals aimed at expanding student opportunity and aligning high-school offerings with college-preparatory tracks.
Tim Shallow, presenting curriculum-committee recommendations, said the slate included two middle-school expansions'Unified Physical Education and an EL English course for multilingual learners'and two high-school changes: AP Computer Science Principles (with a cybersecurity variant) and AP Seminar as a replacement or reframing of Advanced English 10.
"We have a lot of student interest in this," the presenter said of cybersecurity and noted AP Seminar is part of the AP Capstone research track, focused on research projects and presentations that are scored by the College Board.
The administration said the new or revised courses are expected to have minimal impact on staff FTE and budget while creating broader curricular opportunities. The board moved and approved the course proposals by voice vote.
Board members welcomed the additions, saying they provide students earlier exposure to in-demand fields and support research skills in upper-level English. The curriculum committee encouraged board members to review the committee meeting materials for details and implementation planning.
