Waunakee co-curricular meeting spotlights athletic state qualifiers, safety and recognition plans

At the Dec. 2 co-curricular meeting of the Waunakee Community School District, district staff summarized a series of athletic accomplishments and operational changes, including several conference championships, multiple state qualifiers and a plan to expand recognition of student athletes.
The staff report highlighted conference championships in girls cross country, girls tennis, girls volleyball and football, and noted participation levels remain higher than three years ago when including mountain biking, football cheer and other WNA sports. The speaker said the highest team grade-point average this year was girls swim, "at 3.8," and noted several athletes achieved All-State honors after conference and statewide selection processes.
The report named individual highlights: Megan Bridal set and then broke her own school record in swimming at sectionals and at state, and a 400-free relay also qualified for state. The speaker said girls volleyball reached the state semifinals for the first time in 32 years. The district also called out conference coach awards, noting two coaches received back-to-back conference coach-of-the-year recognitions.
On operations, staff described changes to parking and access on Community Drive intended to improve safety near the main gate during large events, and said the district coordinated those changes with maintenance and the police department. The report flagged a poorly lit drop-off area near the soccer field and said staff are exploring adding lighting; some families had already shifted drop-offs to better-lit areas closer to the middle school.
Looking ahead, the presenter noted the Badger Conference plans to roll out an official boys volleyball conference in 2027, which should standardize scheduling and provide conference recognition for that sport. The district also described routine co-op renewals on the consent agenda (girls hockey with Sun Prairie West as lead, and annual gymnastics renewal), a new monthly coach-nominated student recognition program beginning in January, and a student athletic leadership team initiative that organized an officials appreciation effort.
The meeting also included an announcement of a signing day event for college-bound athletes scheduled the following morning.
The committee did not take substantive policy votes on these items; the report was informational and staff said several items would appear on the full-board agenda or consent agenda where appropriate.
