Summary
Director Deborah McLaren reviewed November Special Olympics bowling activities and said a track meet will be held at Burwick High School (date to be set, likely January or later); she credited student volunteers and encouraged community attendance.
Deborah McLaren gave an account of recent Special Olympics activities: a Halloween 'trick-or-treat' bowling event and additional bowling sessions in November that included high school and elementary students. McLaren said the format gave students more space and reduced sensory overload for students on the autism spectrum, and that the events were well attended by parents, school staff and student volunteers. "If you would come and see the smiles on their faces and even the tears, you will really have a good time there," McLaren said.
She said the district plans to schedule bowling on a two-cycle basis going forward because it better serves students despite higher costs. McLaren said the track meet will take place at Burwick High School this year, but she has not set a firm date because of rain in April; she indicated January is a possibility. She encouraged committee members and families to attend and thanked student groups and staff for organizing the events.
Next steps: McLaren will set and announce the track meet date when logistics are finalized and invited the community to support the students at both bowling and track events.
