The Tangipahoa Parish School Board on Nov. 18 approved several routine and facility-related actions, including renewal of portable-classroom leases, adoption of the 2026–27 academic calendar and a directive to administration to study a balanced calendar for 2027–28 rather than adopt it now.
Board action: On a roll-call vote the board approved renewing leases for portable buildings from Satellite Shelters and William Scotsman, subject to court approval. Debate before the vote focused on cost and condition: a speaker in the discussion said the district currently pays about “$27,000 for buildings that are built in way, way, like, the 19 nineties,” and urged exploring purpose-built metal classroom replacements rather than continuing short-term leases. The motion carried with all recorded members voting "yes."
Calendar decisions: The board adopted the administration’s recommendation to use calendar option 1 for the 2026–27 school year (administration said option 1 received roughly 37% of the public vote). For the 2027–28 year the administration recommended a balanced calendar (option 3). Several board members said they were unprepared to adopt a calendar for 2027–28 now and requested more public engagement and study. The board instead approved a motion to proceed with community meetings, fact-finding and a study commission to explore the balanced-calendar option and reserved the right to adopt or change the calendar later; the motion carried on a roll-call vote.
Other votes at the meeting included approval of a certificate of substantial completion for a Loranger High School locker-room project by Gassaway, Gassaway & Bankston and approval of several committee reports and retreat minutes. The board tabled approval of the Nov. 4 board minutes so staff and board can make clarifications before the next meeting.
The board recorded roll-call votes for the major measures; recorded votes show the members present voted in favor of the lease renewals, calendar adoption for 2026–27 and the directive to study 2027–28.
