The Brentwood Select Board on Nov. 19 authorized staff to release the title for a decommissioned 2018 Ford Explorer that the police department had transferred to a vendor in exchange for vehicle‑outfitting labor.
“Earlier in the year, the PD had proposed getting rid of three cruisers… Both Explorers had over 130,000 miles on them,” Sergeant Spitaleri told the board, describing the department’s prior informal arrangements with an outfitter who stripped equipment and provided labor in exchange for vehicles. “We exchanged the cars for labor on our stuff… The labor in total was about $3,000 that we didn't have to pay,” he said.
Board members asked for written documentation of the exchange rather than relying on the oral agreement. Members requested a bill of sale or an invoice from the outfitter detailing the work and the agreed credit so the town has a paper trail; Sergeant Spitaleri agreed to provide an invoice outlining the labor performed and the total credit applied.
A motion to release the vehicle title and sell the car for $1 (formalizing the transfer) was moved and seconded; the board approved the motion by voice vote. Staff was directed to obtain the vendor invoice and prepare the bill of sale to complete the transfer.
The action formalizes an existing informal exchange and closes the town’s title liability once staff files the required paperwork.
