Terrebonne Parish officials report progress on Hurricane Ida school recoveries; one contractor transition announced

Terrebonne Parish school officials told the Building, Food Service and Transportation Committee that reconstruction work on storm-damaged schools is advancing and that at least one campus could reopen to students after the Christmas break.
Mister Beard, speaking for the program team, said that contractors and school staff have pushed major work forward: “They will make it so that they will open up for the students after the Christmas break,” he said, and listed completed items including installed bleachers, electrical pull work for the auditorium and a finalized kitchen. He said final cleaning and a health-department inspection are scheduled for next month and that substantial completion should be achieved by then. Beard also said he is stepping down from his role on the project and that Dylan Trowe will finish the project.
On another campus, Ms. Shelley gave a progress report on South Terrebonne Middle School: contractor mobilization is complete, steel framing is being erected, the second major first‑floor concrete pour was done the week of Nov. 10, front parking is complete, plumbing rough‑in is about 90% complete and subsurface drainage is about 40% complete. “We are currently about 200 days in our 600‑day construction contract, and I would say, overall, we’re about 15% complete,” Shelley said. Staff noted roughly 23 rain‑delay days have occurred so far.
Ms. Shelley also summarized the LaCache Middle School demolition schedule: a pre‑bid meeting is set for Dec. 4 and the bid opening for Dec. 15; demolition is expected to take about six months because of asbestos abatement needs.
Separately, the committee recommended issuing a notice to proceed to Cherami and Bruce Architects for demolition of canopies and walkways at South Terrebonne High and set a budget of $242,854 to be paid from FEMA reimbursement and disaster funds, staff said. The transcript includes a garbled FEMA figure; staff cited FEMA reimbursement as a funding source but the committee’s minutes should be checked to confirm the precise FEMA amount.
Next steps include a full‑board vote on the committee’s recommendations and, for demolition work, advertising of bids/quotes and execution of necessary documents.
