The Town of Kernersville Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to name the dog park at Ivy Redmond Sports Complex the Joseph L. Penix Jr. Memorial Dog Park.
Mayor Pro Tem Chris Thompson moved to adopt the resolution; Alderman JR Gorham seconded the motion and the board approved it without opposition. The resolution recited Penix’s public service, noting he served six consecutive terms (12 years), served on the Fireman’s Relief Fund Board, and participated in local boards and foundations.
The resolution also highlighted Penix’s involvement with animals and said he could often be seen at the park with his dogs, Max and Cody. At the meeting family and colleagues thanked the board for the memorial action. Outgoing Alderman John Barrow, who received a separate resolution of appreciation during the meeting, offered remarks recalling shared service on the board.
The board adopted the naming in a single motion during its special organizational meeting; the designation will be reflected in town records and signage plans as the town completes administrative steps to implement the change.
