The Wells Board of Selectmen opened a workshop Dec. 3 to define the mission and tasks of a newly standing Lodging Advisory Committee, emphasizing transportation projects, seasonal workforce support and a continued role reviewing lodging license applications.
Chair Speaker 1 said the board intends to preserve public conversation during workshops, asserting that “conversation is good and not having conversation is bad.” Speaker 2 presented a set of talking points that the committee should explore, including enhanced transportation from the train station to lodging, flexible-route transit, reestablishing a trolley and a water taxi, and investigating a pedestrian bridge across Wells Harbour to improve tourist flow and commerce for lodging and restaurants.
Several committee members and board participants urged the group to retain a licensing-review function. Speaker 4 said the committee should "review all the applications for the lodging licenses to make sure that the applications are filled out properly and accurately" and recommend referrals to code enforcement when appropriate. Participants also proposed an interactive online lodging-licensing application—fillable forms or a DocuSign/interactive workflow—to reduce repeated follow-ups with applicants.
Speakers suggested the committee coordinate public education about existing transit (the "orange line") and consider modest infrastructure such as benches or bus shelters at stops. Multiple participants recommended that the committee include representatives from lodging, code enforcement, and town staff in its work to ensure feasible recommendations.
The board did not take a formal vote to create the standing committee during the workshop; members instead discussed roles, meeting cadence and reporting to the town manager and selectmen. The board indicated it would distribute a draft of the committee mission and collect feedback from committee members before finalizing scope and responsibilities.
