Shidel said the event featured cultural presentations, keynote speaker JC Watts, and participation from the mayor of Bethany, Mayor Sandoval. He reported about 180 people had signed up and roughly 140—150 attended. A post-event survey with about 104 responses identified priorities that included community and culture, housing concerns, local government engagement and services such as health and child care.
The committee recommended creating a multicultural coalition with quarterly meetings that include city representation, expanding multilingual communications, partnering with nonprofits and local businesses, and exploring culturally focused events or another summit in the fall. Shidel also highlighted YouthBuild and other community partners for their contributions to programming and outreach.
Several commissioners praised the event—s community engagement and suggested follow-up steps to sustain momentum and measure impact. The committee said it will develop a plan for a multicultural coalition and return recommendations to the commission for further discussion.
