Commission clears drainage repairs and lights upgrade for county football field

Youth sports representatives briefed the Strafford County Board of Commissioners Nov. 20 on persistent standing water and electrical needs at the county football field and asked permission to proceed with drainage work and field lighting.
Matt Keane, representing football and lacrosse programs, said two deep French drains (one at each problematic end zone), grading of the parking area and an electrical upgrade from 200‑amp to 400‑amp service would allow six fixed LED light poles (three per side). Keane said the Eversource installation would likely cost under $20,000 and, if installed, would eliminate recurring portable‑light rental costs that have run about $2,000 a month.
Commissioners discussed potential light pollution and time restrictions; the chair emphasized lights should be aimed to avoid spill onto neighbors’ properties. Douglas Kane, director of maintenance, offered to coordinate drainage plans, suggested tying into a nearby capital drainage project to shorten runs, and provided his Strafford County contact information for technical follow‑up.
Keane said French drains should address standing water that reached roughly one foot in an end zone and rendered the field unusable for about six weeks last year. Commissioners expressed support and encouraged technical coordination prior to construction.
