Library board hears county timeline for ramp, parking and Seneca pavement fixes

The Oconee County Public Library Board received updates Nov. 25 on several building and maintenance projects affecting main branches and parking.

Blair (staff liaison/Director) reported the library spoke with Kyle Reid, assistant director of public works, who said the county aims to schedule the library’s parking‑lot/ramp project early next year but is still seeking an asphalt foreman to complete the more intricate parking overlay work. The planned configuration will add eight standard spaces at the front of the building plus two accessible (ADA) front spaces and will level the approach to the front sidewalk so patrons using the accessible spaces can enter the front doors rather than use the rear entrance.

On an immediate fix, Roads and Bridges crews addressed a longstanding drainage problem at the Friends’ garage entrance by grinding concrete where the slab met asphalt and removing a speed hump that had impeded proper runoff. Blair said crews used a laser level before removing the hump and, following recent rain, the site appears to be draining as expected. The Friends group reported being pleased with the result.

Staff also said the Seneca pavement project will require some tree/transplant work to accommodate new parking; the library will follow up with the county to preserve plantings where feasible. Additional building concerns raised included an HVAC issue in the McAuley room and a minor roof leak at Walhalla; staff said facilities maintenance will address those items.

No formal vote was required for these updates; staff will follow up on scheduling and contractor availability and report back to the board.
