The Oconee County Board of Zoning Appeals voted Nov. 24 to approve a special exception to allow a roof-mounted sign for McNeely’s at 13447 North Highway 11 (TMS 0540002061).
Unidentified Speaker 2, running the hearing, said the application (SE25-000002) invoked section 32-5-21(5) of the county code because the sign would be roof-mounted rather than a wall sign. Daniel Hamby, who identified himself as a sign installer representing the installer for McNeely’s, told the board the proposed rooftop sign was modest and “I think it would look great.” Matt Reynolds, introduced as “with McNeely,” said the roof location was effectively the only place on the building to mount a sign.
A staff member explained the road-facing sign already approved by the county complies with the ordinance, but that a separate special exception is required when a sign is mounted on the roof. Board members moved through the four required findings for a variance/special exception with no extended discussion. After votes on each finding, the board approved the special exception. The board recorded approval and proceeded to the next agenda item.
The application packet lists the applicant’s name and the TMS number; the board noted the proposed sign would be roughly 4 by 8 feet (described during the hearing as “a relatively small sign”). The transcript contains one instance spelling the business name differently; meeting presenters identified the business orally as McNeely’s.
Next steps: No additional conditions or an appeal timetable were announced during the hearing. The board moved on after announcing the approval.
