Commission approves insurance‑funded replacement sheriff vehicle and uniform bid process

The St. Francois County Commission authorized the sheriff’s department to purchase a replacement fleet vehicle using insurance proceeds after an accident left the vehicle a total loss.
Speaker 3 (the sheriff) told the commission the insurer deemed the vehicle a total loss but the insurance check will cover buying a new vehicle; the county will buy back the salvage (salvage value) and expect to reuse many upfit components. “Everything from that vehicle can swap over with the exception of the grill guard and the decals,” Speaker 3 said, estimating roughly $1,800 to put a brand new vehicle back on the road after transferring parts.
Speaker 5 moved to permit the sheriff’s department to purchase a replacement vehicle with insurance funds; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The sheriff said a second local state‑bid dealership was being pursued if the closest dealer could not deliver immediately.
Commissioners also granted permission to advertise bids for uniforms for the assessor, sheriff and maintenance departments. Speaker 3 confirmed uniforms are paid from an annual uniform budget and are not a new county expense.
Both actions were approved by voice votes during the meeting. Staff said they will proceed to finalize the vehicle purchase and proceed with the uniform solicitation.
