Sheriff and Road & Bridge update the commission; sales tax up modestly for year

Members of the sheriff’s office and Road & Bridge staff updated the commission on operations and finances.
Sheriff Cheryl reported annual calls for service at 19,840 and listed the current inmate population at about 115 (95 males, 20 females). She also announced several community events scheduled for Dec. 16 and Dec. 19.
Road & Bridge described recent snow response, equipment breakdowns (including a hydraulic failure on a loader and transmission issues on pickup trucks), bridge and ditch work, and an effort to acquire used, engineer-certified bridge beams that previously cost the county about $70,200 for 42 beams in 2021. Staff said recent purchases (for example, six beams for Aldbury Bridge) cost about $77,000, and they discussed procurement and certification processes.
On county revenues, staff reported sales tax receipts were up 1.79% for the year and Prop P receipts were up 8.42%; commissioners discussed how tax exemptions and legislative proposals could affect future local revenues.
