County to press for HSIP funding for Highway W after November fatal crash

The Highway Commissioner reviewed the November Highway Safety Commission draft minutes included in the committee packet and said he would seek the Commission’s endorsement of an HSIP request for the Highway W project. "This meeting was on November 5, and then on November 22, there was a fatal crash on Highway W," the commissioner said, noting the county wants to accelerate safety improvements through available HSIP ('90.1') dollars.
Why it matters: HSIP funds are targeted to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the roadway system; listing Highway W for HSIP consideration could secure state funding for safety design elements ahead of the planned 2029 construction.
Committee members also reviewed a list of state projects and local roadway bridge projects staff had participated in; the commissioner said closing out those projects and coordinating final inspections remains part of staff workload.
What’s next: Staff said they will move to secure HSIP support for the Highway W project in advance of the project’s 2029 schedule and will report back as the Commission and DOT process requests for safety funding.
