Board approves new financial literacy and seeks partnership for contemporary math dual-credit

The Shawnee Heights Board of Education approved two new high school course proposals: a financial literacy class intended to fulfill a state graduation requirement and a contemporary math course the district seeks to offer in partnership with Washburn University for dual-credit.

Stacy Bell presented the proposals, noting financial literacy will replace the older personal finance class and include expanded investing and saving content. On the contemporary math course, Bell explained Washburn is preparing an online contemporary math offering for dual-credit; once Washburn finalizes course content the district will request a curriculum map and pursue the dual-credit arrangement.

Bell described enrollment prerequisites for contemporary math: a math ACT score of 19 or higher, a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, or a C or better in the second semester of Algebra II, plus a placement test. Board members pressed for clear parent communication about choices and transferability of credits. Christina Plaming asked whether Washburn credits transfer to other Kansas universities; Bell said "it'll transfer" but how the receiving university applies the hours depends on the institution and degree program. Board members discussed timing for student-led conferences and how counselors and teachers will advise students and families about pathways.

After discussion, the board moved and approved the course proposals (motion by Christina Plaming, second by Christie) by a 6-0 vote. The district will bring curriculum maps and enrollment guidance to parents and counselors to support course selection ahead of enrollment.
