Planning board adopts UDO changes to downtown signage, increases excluded entryway signage to 10 sq. ft.

The Board approved a UDO text amendment that moves downtown signage rules into Article 5, broadens allowed façade signage types beyond channel-set lettering, and raises the amount of excluded entryway signage from 5 to 10 square feet.
The Jacksonville Planning Advisory Board voted to adopt a Unified Development Ordinance text amendment updating downtown signage rules.
Jennifer, planning staff, said the changes have three parts: move district-specific signage requirements to Article 5 for consistency; relax the current limit that secondary façade signage in the downtown area be channel-set lettering; and change the provision that previously allowed 5 square feet of non-counted entryway signage so that 10 square feet of entryway/transom signage will not count toward a business's total wall-sign allotment. "So basically on any entryway, we would allow 10 square feet of signage that wouldn't be counted towards the total," Jennifer said.
Jennifer noted the ordinance cannot regulate content (hours, logos, etc.) and said mural policy would be discussed separately at a future meeting. A motion to approve the UDO amendment, with an added consistency statement to the land-use plan, carried by voice vote.
The Board directed staff to return with additional guidance and to continue work on a broader long-term signage and mural policy for downtown.
