Council introduces change to extend retirement service credit eligibility for top police and fire officials

The Lansing City Council on Nov. 17 introduced an amendment to chapter 294 intended to encourage retention of top officials in the police and fire departments by extending eligibility for retirement service credits from 25 to up to 30 years for those promoted into those roles.
Vice President Carter described the proposal as an incentive to retain top department officials and said the retirement allowance would not exceed 110% of the member's base wage. "This is amending chapter 294 to encourage the retention of the top official of the fire and the police departments by extending the eligibility for retirement service credits up to 30 years," Carter said.
Council referred the ordinance to the Committee of the Whole for further review and potential refinement before a public hearing or final vote.
