City staff told the commission the Recreation Trails Program has selected Seaside for a grant to renovate and improve trails at Laguna Grande Park on the Seaside side of the lake. Staff described next steps: completing environmental documents, identifying permits and coordinating with Caltrans and the Federal Highways and Waterways Administration before construction can proceed.
"The grant is for the renovation and improvement of the trails at Laguna Grande Park," staff said, and cautioned that environmental review and permitting mean work is likely about two years out.
Assistant Public Works Director Carolyn Burke updated the commission on park projects: Highland, Otis and Fernando Park construction are complete with ribbon‑cuttings to be scheduled; Lincoln Cunningham is at 90% construction documents with an anticipated contract award in late June or early July; Havana picnic area improvements are scheduled for April or May; Coutinho Park's concrete picnic areas and irrigation work are complete and the landscape maintenance period began; Wheeler tennis courts will undergo crack sealing and repainting in spring to support pickleball.
Commissioners pressed staff on tree‑planting recommendations from the Neighborhood Improvement Commission and recent confusion over whether prior plantings were volunteer‑led or city funded. Staff said the proposed $4,500–$5,000 allocation for trees in parks needs site identification and coordination with Public Works and that funds must be spent before the end of the fiscal year (June 30). Commissioners urged expedited coordination so plantings can proceed this season.
Staff also announced a community unveiling of redesigned stars and related inductee events and noted upcoming community programming and partnership opportunities.
