Valdosta council voted to adopt two animal‑related measures brought forward with Lowndes County.
First, council adopted a resolution supporting responsible dog ownership as authorized by the Georgia Responsible Dog Ownership Law and aligning local practices with Lowndes County, including shifting certain appeal procedures to probate court after the county disbanded the prior Animal Control Board.
Second, council approved an ordinance that prohibits retail pet shops from selling dogs and cats and encourages adoption instead. Staff said the Lowndes County animal services department will enforce the city ordinance in partnership with the county. Councilmembers asked clarifying questions about how the ordinance affects stores that host adoption events and whether other animals (birds, reptiles) remain for sale; staff responded that the ordinance focuses specifically on dogs and cats and that adoption programs and non‑pet sales are treated separately.
Both measures passed by motion and voice vote.
