Commissioner announces Waterfront Park grant and notes pending litigation

City Commissioner Laura Schwartz updated the planning commission on several administrative items. She announced the city received a grant to support Waterfront Park Phase 2 and said the award is roughly $500,000; she added the city previously had about that amount earmarked for the project, meaning the new grant would substantially increase available resources for design and construction options.
Schwartz also summarized recent changes to the poverty exemption policy: the income threshold will be set at two times the federal poverty level by family size and the asset exemption was raised to $40,000 with exclusions for primary home, primary vehicle and certain personal property. The commission’s board of review had recently approved exemptions under the prior thresholds and approved additional exemptions under the new rule.
Finally, Schwartz read a prepared statement about pending litigation: the city was sued by a group of residents on Nov. 19. She said the city will follow attorney guidance and the city charter and will not comment further while the case proceeds.
