Finance Committee backs $100,000 appropriation to cover firefighter contract increase

The Brockton Finance Committee on Dec. 1 recommended a mayoral order to appropriate $100,000 to the Fire Department to cover a negotiated, one-year collective bargaining agreement.
Mayor Robert Sullivan described the contract as negotiated in good faith with the firefighters' union and asked the committee to "support this endeavor." CFO Troy Clarkson said the amount is needed because many contract provisions do not take effect until Jan. 1 and that the city has vacancy savings within the fire budget that will partially cover costs. Clarkson summarized the deal as a one-year contract with a 1.5% wage increase, saying the agreement "is financially sustainable."
The committee moved and recommended the appropriation favorably. The recommendation sends the order to the full City Council for final approval.
