Gustavo V. Camacho elected Pico Rivera mayor for 2026; Monica Sanchez named mayor pro tem

The Pico Rivera City Council elected Gustavo V. Camacho as mayor for 2026 and Dr. Monica Sanchez as mayor pro tem during its Dec. 9 meeting, each by unanimous 5–0 roll-call votes.
The clerk opened nominations for mayor; outgoing Mayor John Garcia nominated Gustavo Camacho and, hearing no other nominations, closed nominations. The council voted 5–0 to elect Camacho. The council subsequently opened nominations for mayor pro tem and elected Dr. Monica Sanchez by unanimous roll call.
Councilmembers and members of the public presented a commemorative book and a proclamation recognizing outgoing Mayor John Garcia. Multiple colleagues praised Garcia’s long-standing community involvement and leadership. Garcia, delivering his final remarks as mayor, thanked staff, commissioners, family and residents and outlined accomplishments during his term, including sustained fiscal strength, awards for financial reporting, new public-safety technology implementations such as ShotSpotter and license-plate readers, infrastructure investments and expanded veteran services. "Serving the people of Pico Rivera has been one of my greatest honors of my life," Garcia said.
The council adjourned the meeting in honor of Beverly Walker, a longtime library literacy advocate, and wished the community a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
