Speakers at the Boone City Council meeting highlighted recent gains in tourism, development and housing while outgoing mayor Steins urged continued momentum.
A tourism/visitor-economy presenter (S6) recapped events and promotions that brought visitors to Boone — including RVTV weekend and a large industry event (PGI) that used local vendors — and said, "hotel motel dollars are up almost $11,000, $10,964 to be exact." The presenter also noted a 49.84% increase in monthly hotel receipts since 2020 when the organization became a standalone entity.
An AIMS regional-alliance update (S8) shared broader indicators of local investment, citing about $273,000,000 in taxable valuation growth over a recent multi-year span and reporting 204 housing units permitted in the last two years. The presenter attributed the figures to a combination of assessor valuation, private investments in downtown buildings and new single-family construction.
In the meeting’s closing section, Mayor Steins delivered a farewell speech invoking Newton’s first law to make a broader point about city leadership and momentum: "Progress does not happen by accident. Momentum does not sustain itself without effort," the mayor said, urging the council to balance change with preserving what makes Boone unique. Council members thanked outgoing members and reflected on accomplishments across eight years of service.
The council did not take action on the tourism numbers but asked staff and partners to circulate fuller year-end reports and follow-up materials in January.
