Middleton commission postpones ordinance after blacksmith shop relocation deemed infeasible

The postponement came after an extended discussion of the feasibility of relocating the historic blacksmith shop to a new trailhead near Pheasant Branch. Speaker 4, Unidentified Speaker, summarized staff findings that moving the building was "too expensive" and "too risky," noting that relocation would likely require temporarily raising power lines and other costly utility work. Speaker 4 said staff had previously investigated the idea and that relocating the building across the street was judged infeasible.
Commissioners discussed two possible windows to revisit relocation: (1) obtaining and updating 2022 cost estimates to see if shared funding or grant options might change feasibility, and (2) the planned intersection and trailhead projects in 2026–27, which could create physical room or coordinated work that would reduce moving costs. Speaker 3 said a QuikTrip representative had been engaged in earlier conversations and that QuikTrip indicated some openness to discussion about the property.
No ordinance action was taken at the meeting; the commission will consider the ordinance and any new information about costs and utility coordination at its next scheduled meeting.
