The Middleton Landmarks Commission organized a citywide inventory of 23 landmarks and assigned commissioners to specific clusters of sites for field condition checks and photography.
Staff presented a color-coded inventory and asked volunteers to document plaque condition, mount condition and visibility. Commissioners volunteered for particular sites — including the Lustron House, Wolf House, Lemke House, Raleigh House, boat houses, train depot, American Hotel, Opera House, Schwinn House and others — and agreed to submit photos and brief condition notes to staff for consolidation. Daphne said she will compile the photographs into a single document and circulate them to commissioners.
Members discussed owner contacts and permissions. The commission agreed to send a form letter to property owners ahead of any door-to-door contact. Commissioners noted special considerations: one owner asked that a plaque not be removed from a Lustron house because of siding concerns; the blacksmith site is on a parcel owned by Kwik Trip and may require outreach to corporate real-estate representatives; commissioners suggested staff draft standardized outreach language.
In a staff update, commissioners were told Tracy Schnell has been preparing monthly progress reports, updating Wisconsin Historical Society entries with color photos, and will meet with the State Historic Preservation Officer in March or early April to discuss national-register potential. Staff will present compiled inventory results and any recommended follow-up at the next meeting.
Commissioners set next steps: take photos and notes, email addresses and photos to staff ahead of the next meeting, and add inventory, the Zigglers’ pre-application and landmarks-ordinance review to future agendas.
