Kailia Webb, a student at Chipman Junior High School, spoke at a ceremony in Bakersfield celebrating the installation of a new bicycle repair station installed as part of the Safer Streets project.
"Today, we're excited to celebrate the installation of this new bicycle repair station as part of our Safer Streets project," Webb said, noting that her class spent months studying what makes streets safe or unsafe for people who walk, bike and travel around Bakersfield.
Webb said small improvements can make a measurable difference for riders. "A simple repair station like this helps riders keep their bikes in good condition, which means fewer accidents and more people choosing to ride safely," she said.
She framed the project as a student-driven effort. "This project has taught us that improving our community isn't just up to the adults. Students can help too," Webb said, adding that amenities like the repair station aim to encourage more biking, increase awareness and create safer streets for everyone.
Webb closed by thanking the city, Chipman and other supporters for backing the project and said students were proud to be part of making Bakersfield safer.
