Speaker 2 told the Board of Education that the district will launch a new high‑school science research program that will begin in 'year 1' with research methodology and grow into a four‑year sequence culminating in regional competitions. "This is your science research which will lead to those prestigious competitions," Speaker 2 said.
The speaker said the district is remaking its media academy based on student input and is introducing an investigative journalism class and a film studies option, with courses that can carry English credit. "We're remaking it… and we are introducing a new course in that academy, investigative journalism class," Speaker 2 said.
Speaker 2 also announced an advanced Spanish course aimed at native speakers who have already taken AP Spanish literature as juniors so they will have a senior‑level option. "This is important because a lot of native speakers take AP class… as a senior, they're just no course they'll have to take," Speaker 2 said, describing the goal of providing deeper instruction in students' native language.
District staff highlighted support and access for families: Speaker 2 urged parents to use the parent portal for regular academic updates and to contact guidance counselors with questions about AP offerings and course selection. When Speaker 1 asked what learning supports would be available across elementary and secondary grades to help families navigate the new curriculum, Speaker 1 pressed for specifics on materials and parental guidance; that exchange focused on ensuring the curriculum changes include tools for parents and students.
On early childhood enrollment, Speaker 2 said the district will open the universal pre‑K lottery registration in January after the December break, announce who is accepted later in January and begin registration thereafter to allow waitlisted families earlier access to seats. The presenter said the revised timeline is a response to parent feedback from the prior year.
The board expects a presentation on the math program from Scott Graner Poe at an upcoming meeting. The district also reminded families that schools will be closed for winter recess from Dec. 24 through Jan. 2 and that the next board meeting is scheduled for Jan. 14 at the high school.
