Superintendent reports false alarms from propane detectors, outlines recalibration plan and flags federal education reorganization

During the Nov. 19 meeting Superintendent Chris updated the board on two operational matters: recurring fire alarms driven by propane/gas detectors and a federal-level Department of Education reorganization that could change how some funding is administered.
On safety, Chris said detectors installed in 2024 were producing multiple alarms because, over time, the sensing medium can become 'saturated' with other chemicals and default to alarm. District staff worked with the manufacturer and recalibrated the Wyndham High School detectors (22 in science labs were cited) and have adopted a six‑month retraining/recalibration protocol; sample gas bottles have been ordered to retrain natural‑gas detectors in other parts of the district.
On funding, the superintendent said the federal department announced plans to move certain programs (Title I, early-learning duties and some others) to different agencies; RSU 14 currently receives roughly $500,000 in Title I and about $900,000 in special-education funding routed through the state. He said the district will monitor timing and administrative changes as the state and federal agencies define their processes.
The board recorded thanks to students and staff for orderly evacuations during alarms, and staff said they will keep the board updated on both recalibration outcomes and any new information about federal funding changes.
