Finance committee recommends some parks staffing additions but denies several conservancy/forestry items; PRFC urged to advocate

Speaker 1, a parks staff member, provided an update on the budget review by the finance & personnel committee. The committee recommended several operational items for the Parks & Recreation budget (including a marketing/outreach specialist and a conservancy lands technician) and approved parks operating funds. It did not recommend additional funding for conservancy operations or a forestry technician, and it denied seasonal parks/forestry support that staff had requested.
On capital, the committee recommended some items (playground replacement plan, Baumann Community Pool work, an articulated loader to assist forestry and snow removal, athletic court maintenance and Lakeview Pond treatment) and declined others (Lakeview Park entrance reconstruction, a pruning block and some site amenities). Staff said two projects would rely on donation or special-revenue funds (a baseball scoreboard and certain pond treatments), and stressed that without added funding the department will struggle to deliver forestry pruning blocks and other routine maintenance next year.
“...we're gonna struggle very heavily to even, put together a pruning block next year,” Speaker 1 said, urging commissioners and the public to contact their alder and provide public comment at common council hearings if they want to influence funding decisions. The recommendation from finance & personnel will forward to the full common council for final consideration.
No final city council decisions were made at this meeting; the report was informational and commissioners were encouraged to follow the process and testify at council hearings if they wish to advocate for restorations.
