Middleton updates courts, dog-park plans and shoreline restoration; dog park comment period to close Oct. 27

At the Oct. 20 meeting, Speaker 1, a parks staff member, briefed the commission on several capital and improvement projects.
Lakeview Park: staff said crews will pour concrete for the new tennis and pickleball courts on Thursday, Oct. 23, with heavy truck traffic on Madonna Avenue near the university. Speaker 1 cautioned that access will be limited during the 7 a.m.–4 p.m. work window.
Dog parks: staff held a public informational meeting earlier the same night that drew standing-room attendance, and opened an online public comment form that will remain active until Monday, Oct. 27. Staff plans to compile consultant and public input, then present an improvement plan with projected costs in December or January. Speaker 1 noted there is existing dog-park permit revenue that could help fund improvements.
Lake Street Park shoreline: staff reported DNR sampling and two possible paths: preserve and restore the developing native wetland or dredge the area. Speakers cited dredging of a comparable site on Lake Mendota at roughly $700,000 and suggested a smaller dredge could still be on the order of $500,000; staff said restoration integrated into operations is the more financially feasible option.
Lakeview pier operations: Speaker 1 said seasonal removal, storage and reinstallation of the Lakeview pier will cost about $10,000 annually and needs to be included in operations budgeting.
Other work: repainting of shelters in Middleton Hills North and South, basketball court reconstruction and paving, and site prep for an unnamed shelter site were also reported. Staff said some projects will continue next spring depending on weather and budget approvals.
