Commission backs recommending Dane County EV charging site at Lakeview Park to council

The Middleton Parks and Recreation Forestry Commission voted Nov. 3 to recommend that the common council approve a Dane County electric-vehicle charging installation at Lakeview Park.
Staff told the commission the Charge Up Dane program selected Lakeview Park to advance to the next phase of its grant process, which would fund installation and cover utility costs for the first five years. Staff said a usage fee would be assessed after that period so revenue could cover ongoing utility expenses.
Commission discussion focused on site placement and public access. Staff said several possible locations within the park parking lot were identified, with preference for visibility from the road and availability only during park hours. Commissioner comments were supportive: “That’s exciting,” one commissioner said during discussion.
After brief discussion, a commissioner moved to recommend approval to common council and the commission approved the recommendation by voice vote. Staff included a memo in the meeting packet describing the program and requested the commission’s recommendation to the personnel finance committee and council.
Next steps: staff will forward the recommendation to council for its review and any additional approvals required to finalize the grant award and site design.
