The Middleton Plan Commission voted Oct. 28 to forward proposed revisions to the city’s lighting ordinance (Chapter 33 of the municipal code) to the License and Ordinance Committee and the common council.
Staff explained the primary change replaced prior language about waivers and exceptions with a consistent "exemptions" approach and added IES‑recommended light levels for exterior parking areas (typical design targets around 1.5 to 2 foot‑candles, with modest allowances). The revisions aim to reduce unnecessary lighting in parking areas while retaining exemptions for security and safety concerns. Commissioners discussed safety tradeoffs and whether the item should first go to the license and ordinance committee; the commission ultimately voted to recommend approval to the committee and council.
