The Kernersville Board of Aldermen voted Dec. 9 to approve two personnel actions presented by Town Manager Curtis Swisher: a temporary overhire of two patrol officers and authorization to hire a part‑time event logistics specialist for Parks & Recreation.

Swisher said the Police Department is currently fully staffed and two officers are expected to retire in July; he asked permission to hire two new officers now, place them in field training, and then transition them into the retiring officers’ positions when those retirements occur. Swisher said the temporary overhire would not permanently increase full‑time staffing and that any small budget impact would be addressed if necessary with a later budget amendment.

For Parks & Recreation, staff proposed a 999‑hour part‑time event logistics specialist (to be hired around April) to coordinate event setup, vendor logistics, facility scheduling and staffing for venues such as Ivy Redmond Park and the Recreation Center. Swisher said the position would likely be rolled into the budget as full time in July if needed.

Alderman Apple moved to approve the event logistics hire; Alderman Savannas seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Alderman Thompson then moved to approve the temporary police overhire; Alderman Apple seconded and the board voted unanimously to approve the request.

Staff said they expected to cover the short-term costs from budget savings but would return with a budget amendment if necessary.
