The Mobile City Board of Adjustment approved variances Tuesday to allow new wayfinding signs near the Amtrak platform at 11 South Water Street, but restricted platform wall signage to informational content without Amtrak branding.
Oliver Dorgan, petitioning on behalf of Bismobile and Visit Mobile, said the proposed informational sign (about 36 inches by 96 inches) is intended to help train passengers find lodging, dining and attractions after they disembark. Planning staff explained that freestanding signs and platform wall signs featuring the Amtrak brand require approval, while a separate Visit Mobile informational sign under the 20‑square‑foot threshold would not need a variance.
Board members said freestanding signs at the platform would help orient visitors and recommended the two smaller platform wall signs be limited to non‑branded informational content. A motion to approve the four freestanding signs and to restrict the wall signs to non‑branded informational material passed by voice vote.
The board did not tie approval to specific Amtrak policies; Dorgan said he represented Visit Mobile rather than Amtrak and that Amtrak’s own sign policy was not fully known to the petitioner.
