District honors student essay winner, regional volleyball champions and five schools for health

At its Nov. 18 meeting the Santa Cruz Valley Unified District recognized Renata Ochoa as a statewide Arizona 529 essay winner, celebrated the Rio Rico High School girls volleyball team's first region championship and awarded five campuses 'America's Healthiest Schools' honors.
The Santa Cruz Valley Unified District used part of its Nov. 18 meeting to recognize student and school achievements.
Renata Ochoa of Guatimundi/Guadalupe Middle School was recognized as a winner in the Arizona 529 essay contest; district staff said she was one of 20 statewide winners and the only winner from Santa Cruz County. The district noted she received a certificate and $529 toward an Arizona 529 education savings plan.
The Rio Rico High School girls volleyball team and coach Alexis Bermudez were honored for a historic season that included a cited 23–6–1 overall record, an 18-match winning streak, region player of the year honors for senior Sofia Guzman and a region coach of the year award for Bermudez. Players and coaches addressed the board and posed for photos.
District staff also announced that five schools were recognized in 2025 as America’s Healthiest Schools by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, citing strengthened physical education, social-emotional supports and family engagement. Principals were invited to receive certificates at the meeting.
Board members offered congratulations and thanked parents, coaches and staff for support; the recognitions were presented early in the meeting as part of routine celebrations of student and school accomplishments.
