Mayor says disputed school-zone speed cameras deactivated, refunds planned

Freddie DeCort, mayor of New Iberia, told the Iberia Parish Council on Dec. 10 that the city had deactivated disputed speed cameras located in a school zone, intends to remove them, and will refund tickets issued at that location.
"Those cameras have been deactivated. Those cameras will be removed, and all tickets given in that school zone will be refunded," DeCort said, and estimated the refunds at about $24,000, with the city’s contract arrangement giving the city 60% and the vendor 40% of revenues.
Council members thanked the mayor and his staff for moving quickly. In the public works committee, members voted to delete a pending agenda item that would have authorized legal counsel to obtain an attorney general’s opinion about the camera at Daskett Road; members said the mayor’s action resolved the immediate operational issue.
The mayor said refunds would take time to process — he estimated roughly a month while city staff compile information and prepare checks. Council members asked follow-up questions about jurisdictional limits and which law enforcement agency would assume enforcement once cameras are removed; the mayor said the sheriff or state police would have jurisdiction where city authority ceases.
The deleted public-works item will not move forward following the mayor’s announcement.
